Michael Lawrence is an independent researcher who is presently working on: drug wars and political formation; statebuilding and state formation; governance in areas of weak statehood; applications of complexity theory in the social sciences; innovative and unconventional security approaches; and the future of liberal peacebuilding.

Michael’s publications include: “Towards a Non-State Security Sector Reform Strategy”; “A Complex Systems Approach to the Drug War in Mexico: Resources, Violence and Order”; several op-eds; and contributions to CIGI’s Rethinking Peacebuilding blog.

He holds an honors BA in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Toronto, an MA in Global Governance from the Balsillie School of International Affairs, and was a part of CIGI’s Security Sector Governance project.
